Last Saturday, John & Sue Rumbelow’s 29 years of service to the Streaky Bay Racing Club was acknowledged. John & Sue joined the committee of the Streaky Bay Racing Club back in the 1993/94 season and held a number of key roles over this time including Treasurer and Secretary.John & Sue Rumbelow 1

Racing SA Chair, Rob Rorrison, was in attendance at the Streaky Bay Cup last Saturday, and presented John & Sue with a plaque recognising their contribution and dedication to the Streaky Bay Racing Club.

The Rumbelows were certainly surprised by the special acknowledgment at Streaky Bay Racing Club’s big day and were incredibly thankful about receiving the acknowledgement and recognition.

Reflecting on their time at the club, John & Sue discussed the growth they had seen over the three decades.  “Our facilities have definitely improved over the years, [the secretary’s office] is a mansion compared with what we started with.”

The Rumbelows began their involvement with the club 29 years ago having minimal interest in racing except for the odd Melbourne Cup. John explain how casually his involvement initially came about, “The club was short of a secretary and I thought, oh well I’ll give it a go if you”. As they say, the rest is history!

The overwhelming highlight for both John & Sue during their time with the Streaky Bay Racing Club was being awarded life membership in 2011.

The decision to bring an end to 29 years on the committee was initiated by Sue, she explained “John would have continued on but I used to do the administration work throughout the year and it would always get busy from November through until the Cup.” Sue felt her time at the club had come to an end and offered John the option to continue on, “I said to John, are you prepared to do what I do? He said no and that was that!”

John & Sue are keen to continue supporting the club even after stepping back, including provided guidance to the new Treasurer and Secretary, but are looking forward to being able to travel more without having to take their laptops and paperwork with them.

Country Racing SA would like to congratulate and thank John & Sue for their 29 years of dedication and hard work as part of the Streaky Bay Racing Club committee!

Country racing in South Australia relies on the support of volunteers who give their time on the committees of each of the twenty four country racing clubs. Everyone’s contribution is vital in the continued success of country racing across the state!

We encourage anyone interested in being involved in country racing to get in contact with their local racing club and see what roles are available and be part of a wonderful community!
