Strathalbyn Cup Recap

Close to two thousand excited patrons turned out to be part of history as the 100th instalment of the Strathalbyn Cup was run and won. The weather threatened to dampen the occasion but held off and ensured it was a glorious event.

The historic event was marked with newly created hospitality offerings including the Winner’s Circle picnic area and the Centenary Garden. With plenty of space, everyone in attendance was able to enjoy fabulous food and wine right by the track looking out over the picturesque views of the Racecourse. There was plenty to do for the kids including a giant sand pit and visiting Farm Darcy’s Travelling Farm amongst a number of activities.

One of the hallmarks off the track at the Strathalbyn Cup is the Fashion at the Races competition, and again this year it did not disappoint. A huge line-up of high quality garments, amazing colours and immaculate grooming was on full display as the judges had the difficult task of picking out category winners. Congratulations to Gabriella De Leso who took out the Best Dressed Lady and walked away with the winning prize and flowers.

All eyes were focused solely on the track for Race 7 with the 100th running of the Strathalbyn Cup, with the field competing for a total prize pool of $107,000. A field of twelve horses competed for the Cup and battled it out over the 2050 meters. In the end, the Patrick Payne trained Bundle of Fun was too strong and delivered a late charge to hold off Clever Man and Platform to claim the 100th Strathalbyn cup.

Beyond the race of the Strathalbyn Cup, it was a local affair with Strathalbyn trainers taking out five of the eight races. A very proud day for the club whilst celebrating such a historical achievement.

Strathalbyn Racing Club CEO, Kristy Martin, was thrilled “I feel privileged to have executed the 100th Strathalbyn Cup, with a record crowd and cannot commend our small team enough. Strathalbyn continues to charm as a country venue”.

The day was a resounding success and was a fabulous Sunday of country racing spent on the Fleurieu Peninsula. Strathalbyn Racing Club is looking forward to their next Sunday race meeting on 21 May.
