2022 Balaklava Cup - Recap

Despite a lead in of strong rain and winds, a crowd of over 4000 converged on Balaklava for the 2022 Balaklava Cup.

The crowd began arriving early, eager to take in the hospitality that the Balaklava Racing Club have become known for, with one group marking the day on their calendar as soon as the race is announced.

"We have been coming to Balaklava as a group for six to seven years, and cannot fault the experience each year.

"Each year we arrive at the racetrack and know we are in for a good day," they said.

Doug Hall, Balaklava Racing Club CEO was please with how the day turned out despite the weather against them at times.

"For the crowd to turn up and support the club considering the weather leading in, and on the day, we are very thankful.

“The committee and staff worked extremely hard to give the day the best opportunity to be successful and a truly fun day it was. Racing was a winner on Balaklava Cup Day," he said.

The feature race proved to be one not to miss, with the Will Clarken-trained Noname Lame taking the honours, providing Clarken with his first Balaklava Cup.

The action was just as hotly contested off the track, with one of the bigger entrant lists for a Fashion At The Races (FATR) event at Balaklava in recent years.

FATR Coordinator, Jaimee Bruggemann thanked all entrants for their amazing outfits despite the weather.

"Balancing a spring outfit with winter weather would have proved difficult.

"The outfits that were produced for the day made our job as judges extremely hard," she said.

Winners on the day were:

Best Dressed Lady: Anais Falzon

Runner Up: Kim Watkinson

Local Lady: Laura McCarthy
