Fashion At The Races - Strathalbyn Cup

With some amazing weather on the day, there was great support for the 2022 Strathalbyn Cup Fashion At The Races event.

It was a hotly contested competition with a number of previous winners on show, but it was Virginia Ross who come away with the honours on the day. We had a chat with Virginia after the win.

Tell us about your winning outfit

My dress is from Torannce, my hat by Jen Marsh of Marsh Millinery and my shoes from the Iconic. To finish it all off my handbag was a gift from a friend.

What did the planning process look like?

I have always been a lover of Torannce, and when I saw this dress on Instagram I instantly fell in love with it. The frills, the floral print, the colour and the best part it has pockets!! I knew it was a dress I could wear for many occasions, especially the races.

Jen Marsh from Marsh Millinery has always made my headwear, she is very talented. I sent Jen a photo of what I was looking for to match my dress and left the designing up to her.  The final product was beautifully made from tulle with exquisite beading. I absolutely loved it.

Where did your love from fashion racing come from?

I have always loved going to Country races and have been going since I was little as my Dad had an interest in horse racing. I absolutely loved the fashion and always admired all the beautiful outfits.

I finally got up the confidence to enter myself many years ago. I don’t get the opportunity to dress up very much these days but when I do I thoroughly enjoy it, especially meeting some lovely ladies along the way.

Who are your style icons?

My style icon would definitely be Kate Middleton. She always looks so classy and feminine.

What products are a non-negotiables in your bag for the races?

Lipstick, bobby pins and plenty of cash for some bets and bubbles.

Describe your personal style

I always try to look classy and elegant. I love colour and tend to pick what suits me and what my favourites are rather then what is on trend or in season.

How do you spend your time when you’re not at racing events?

I am a Property Manager for SAL Real Estate in the little town of Keith. I would say my most important role is being a mum of 4 beautiful children, and that keeps me very busy getting them all from A to B!

I love going to races with my two daughters, who both love the chance to dress up too! I am also lucky enough to have shares in a race horse so I love to watch that when possible too.

What is your style advice for first-time race goers?

Make sure you love what you are wearing and it reflects your personality, that way you will feel confident and enjoy your day but most importantly be comfortable (especially your shoes!).

Virginia was lucky enough to share the day and a Fashions win with her daughter, Scarlett, who took out the girls category.
