Jake Toeroek is hoping to make the most of a rare interstate trip to Tasmania when he partners And Beyond in tonight’s $125,000 Listed Newmarket (1200m) at Launceston.
Victorian jockey and nephew of And Beyond’s trainer, Jason Maskiell, was key in securing Toeroek the opportunity to travel and partner the $3.30 favourite with tab.com.au.
“I’m good friends with Jason (Maskiell) and when they needed a rider for the Newmarket and he suggested me,’’ Toeroek said.
“I flew in Tuesday morning. It was bit surreal, flying here firstly and then walking into the hotel wearing a mask.
“They all looked at us a little bit weird,’’ he said.
Toeroek said a good gate provided a nice race map for the exciting galloper who has won seven of eight starts with his only defeat coming at Caulfield back in July.
“From the barrier I should be sliding forward, either leading or being outside the leader,’’ Toeroek said.
“I’ll be riding him like the best horse and hopefully we will be winning,’’ he said.
Toeroek has also picked up ride aboard Miss Tuppence in the $100,000 3yo Cup for top trainer Adam Trinder.
“That’s a hot speed race that one,’’ Toeroek said.
“Hopefully they cut at each other up front and we can be the ones getting over the top of them,’’ he said.
Fellow Adelaide rider Karl Zechner has also made the trip to Tasmania with five rides, four for leading trainer Scott Brunton, including Lim’s Cruiser in the Newmarket.
