Those interested in a job in racing now have the opportunity to learn the foundation skills from Group 1-winning jockey Clare Lindop and registered Racing SA horse retrainer Sonya Little from Lincoln Park.
An Introduction to Horse Handling session will be held at Lincoln Park at Monarto on Saturday, November 27 from 10.30am – 12.30pm, followed by a complimentary lunch.
The course is $50, which covers costs to use the facilities at not-for-profit Lincoln Park, with limited spots available. Book now by clicking here.
Currently working as Racing SA’s Industry Development and Training Officer, former top jockey Lindop said the workshop was designed for people who were interested in a job in racing but weren’t sure where to start.
“This course has been designed to provide participants with a unique introduction to the racing industry and arm them with an understanding of what happens behind the scenes, including if they were to consider a traineeship as a stable-hand, trackwork rider or in other industry-related roles,” Lindop said.
“We’re excited to develop this initiative to help more young people develop their passion for horses and gain the skills and knowledge needed to work in the industry.
“Thoroughbred racing offers a wide range of interesting jobs and there’s plenty of opportunity for young people to turn their passion for horses into a viable long-term career.
“Furthermore, racing careers are predominantly outdoors; good for mind, body and spirit and all round health, and working alongside animals can be very satisfying.
“It’s sure to be a fun morning, so I’d encourage people who have any interest in working with horses to sign up as spots are limited!”
The Introduction to Horse Handling course includes:
- How to safely approach, catch, control and lead horses
- The basics of performing routine stable duties, cleaning, mucking out, feeding and watering horses, groom horses, daily care and welfare responsibilities
- Get an understanding of the structure of the racing industry and explore race day operations and racing employment opportunities
The course is designed for people who are:
- Interested in animals, learning new skills and industry specific terminology
- Hardworking and enthusiastic
- Able to carry out physical tasks
- Can work in a team environment
- Experience with horses may be helpful but not required
For secondary school students there is the opportunity to receive qualifications if they enrol into a racing certificate which can be part of your SACE credits – please enquire for more details if this is relevant to you.
