Coolth set to bypass Adelaide Cup

Tony and Calvin McEvoy are likely to bypass next month’s Group 2 Adelaide Cup with promising stayer Coolth.

An impressive last-start Flemington winner, Coolth is like to stay at 2000m and be given a crack at some nice races in Melbourne during the spring.

“We’ve actually changed tack with Coolth,” Calvin McEvoy said.

“He’s very well and he’ll run next Saturday in a 2000m race at Caulfield.

“After his win and talking to the ownership group of Darren Thomas and Mark Pilkington, we thought he might not be ready for an Adelaide Cup campaign.

“More mentally than physically; he’s still a bit of a baby.”

Coolth won his first two starts at Balaklava and Murray Bridge before heading to Melbourne and twice chasing home Persan, who went on to finish fifth behind Twilight Payment in the Melbourne Cup.

McEvoy said the lightly-raced four-year-old would be given a spring carnival campaign, while next year’s Adelaide Cup could be a more realistic goal with maturity.

“If he can come out and win next Saturday then we can target more races in the spring with him,” McEvoy said.

“The Adelaide Cup (next year) will always be there. (This year) It’s not out of the question, but it’s unlikely.”
