DARE to Dream runner Blow Torch will target next month’s Listed, $100,000 Balaklava Cup (1600m) after scoring a determined win at Morphettville on Saturday.
Trained by Tony and Calvin McEvoy, Blow Torch is part of a TRSA competition that gave 25 winners a chance to experience racehorse ownership via a share in two horses for themselves and nine friends.
Blow Torch has been a model of consistency since racing under the Dare to Dream colours and has now won two of his past three starts, including Saturday’s win in a BM72 race at headquarters.
Tony McEvoy described the weekend’s win as “deserved” and “narrow, but strong” and says the five-year-old son of All Too Hard would enjoy a freshen up before tackling a black-type event for the first time in his career.
“I’m very happy with this fellow,” he said.
“I’ll send him back to the farm now (and) I’d like to run him in the Balaklava Cup.
“(That) is a step up in grade, but it’s a beautiful race for him I think. He’ll be in on the minimum, and he will love the big spaces of Balaklava over a mile.
“It’s a race I’ve had good success in and a horse in form like this fellow, fresh and well, will be very competitive…”
Ridden by Barend Vorster on Saturday, Blow Torch proved a touch too strong for recent winning machine Territory Titan, who could also be headed to the Balaklava Cup, to be run on Wednesday, September 9.
